FAQ

What is the difference between an eco-label scheme and traceability certification?
An eco-label scheme, such as the Nordic Swan or the EU flower, looks at a product’s impact during its life cycle, and on the basis of this sets criteria that the product must fulfil in order to be eco-labelled. It is the manufacturer of the product who applies for the eco-label and puts it on the product. The eco-label then accompanies the product regardless of the number of intermediaries.

A traceability certification, such as FSC or PEFC, is a certification scheme for wood raw material. In essence, these are forestry standards that set criteria for how forests should be used, above and beyond statutory requirements, to ensure respect for the environment and a good work environment, and to safeguard the rights of indigenous peoples, etc. Then all operators handling wood raw materials need to be certified for traceability. This is in order to ensure that the end product produced from the forest (e.g. paper, corrugated cardboard or drying/hygiene paper products) is manufactured from a certified forest, without the involvement of illegally harvested or uncertified forest raw material.
